terms of dealing with syria. there are a number of other options that the white house has been considering. president obama has been very careful in terms of not really talking about those options that are under consideration. tonight that changed and he said he is not at this point considering putting boots on the ground. using the term, he does not foresee putting boots on the ground in syria. the president has to some extent boxed him in. he said of course if syria uses chem weapons that would be a red line. the white house saying they believe chemical weapons were used but there are still too many questions about the origin of the weapons. president obama not ready to say how he is going to proceed when it comes to syria. so again we are still trying to get reaction to the israeli airstrike. >> andrea, you mentioned before john kerry is in moscow, on a trip specifically with the intent of trying to move forward diplomatically on presenting a u united front, to avoid further military escalation, to avoid a regional conflict. the chief on stek sell russia which is course with

telling a story, you usually want to have a couple of lead characters. in this case obama is considered to be the lead character. congress is kind of this nebulous entity. i think it might be more effective for media -- for the media, for the white house, to explain more of congress' intransience instead of naming just congress. but naming real names. mitch mcconnell, john boehner, et cetera. >> even when you start talking about the leaders, what strikes me about john boehner over the last couple of years is he is sort of, to me, a uniquely unpowerful speaker. he has the title, they give him a chauffer, all the perks that come along with the job but we were talking about this in the gun segment, when it comes to actually doing what the green lantern people ask president obama to do, crack heads together, he can't do that to his own republican conference these days but he's led by them much more than he leads them. there's this whole other wrinkle which is probably difficult to explain, too. i want to get into -- i sort of teased the marureen dowd thing. it makes me laugh so i

the first time ever, black voter turnout was higher than white voter turnout. in ohio, pennsylvania, virginia, florida and colorado. that is further evidence of the true significance of the obama coalition. it represents a genuine progressive majority in this country. and when the obama coalition is activated and invested on an issue they can change political gravity. they can make things orbit in a different way than they would have otherwise. in the wake of the sandy hook massacre, under the leadership, under a sudden outpouring of money, organization, effort, rhetorical leadership and passion, we've seen the political gravity around the issue of gun safety move faster and further than anybody would've guessed it could just a few months ago. so, yeah, that vote was a setback, a big one. the real story is the politics that come after the vote. and the president said as much himself on the day the background check bill went down under a senate filibuster. >> all in all, this was a pretty shameful day for washington. this effort is not over. i want to make it clear to the american pe
